Savannah meets Grandpa Sasser

Today we visited Great Grandma and Grandpa Walls, Grandpa Sasser and Great Aunt Chrissy.  It was nice catching up with everyone over some pizza and homemade goodies that I baked myself :) Savannah was very content with my dad, he held her pretty much the entire time. It was very sweet to see them together for the first time.

Emergency Room

Yes, that's where we were late yesterday afternoon.  I noticed Wednesday night that Savannah felt extremely warm; she was extra fussy and wasn't sleeping the way that she normally does.  We just chalked it up to teething because she's been showing other signs of that lately.  Then yesterday afternoon after a her nap I gave her a bottle and again she felt very warm so we decided to take her temperature.  When she was in the NICU they always had us do it in her armpit so that's what we did, it was 100.6.  I knew that anything over 100.4 was cause for concern so I called her doctor.  She said to give her Tylenol, plenty of fluids and to keep an eye on her temp.  She also said that taking her temp rectally is much more accurate.  As much as we didn't want to, we knew we had to and it came out 102.2.  I called the doctor right back and all she said was "Emergency room, take her to the emergency room"  I was scared and could feel the tears coming on.  We took her directly to Cape Coral Hospital which is only about 5-10 minutes away.  Within 20 minutes they called our name, I was shocked because the lady said there was 11 people ahead of us.  They took her temp and it was 103.0, wow...I was really getting nervous because it was rising and I know with her being so little that isn't good.  They gave her some Tylenol and we had to wait for it to kick in.  Finally they took us back again and the nurse and doctor came in, asking questions and all that.  All the while our fever stricken little one is hamming it up for both the nurse and doc.  She was just smiling away.  I asked if this could have anything to do with teething and they said the fever is a little high for teething so they went on to explain it could be a viral infection.  Then he said he wanted to check her urine for a possible UTI (urinary tract infection) I'm thinking, what?! I've never heard of a baby having that, I've had them in the past and they were very painful.  So they got a urine sample and sure enough the results came back positive for a UTI.  My poor baby.  They prescribed antibiotics and sent us on our way.  We were there a total of 3 hours and I'd say she didn't start fussing until the last half hour.  She was so good, we couldn't have asked for a better baby.  We checked on her throughout the night, she was definitely more fussy than usual and didn't sleep as well but she was ok.  I got up this morning with her and could tell she still wasn't feeling so good so I picked up her prescription, gave her a dose and now she's napping.

4 months old and already a trip to the emergency room.  Let's hope that's it for a long long time.

Time for Pea's!

The Baby Bullet is working out great! So far I've made sweet potatoes, rice cereal and pea's.  She seemed to enjoy the potato's and peas the most.  I can't believe how simple it is to make homemade baby food. And I must say it just feels right.  We don't grab a jar of food every time we eat- we cook our food.  So why should it be any different for her? PLUS, the cost savings is amazing!
  • A bag of peas cost me about $1.50
  • 3 cups of peas per bag
  • 3 cups will make 12 - 2 oz servings
  • That's 12 servings for $1.50
  • Which is 18 cents per serving! Wowza!

I believe 1 jar of organic baby food is about $1, give or take.  So I'm saving some serious moolah!  Right now Savannah is only eating about a tablespoon at each feeding, but eventually she'll be eating the full 2 oz.  Whether she eats more or less, I'm still saving a lot of money not to mention I know exactly what she's eating, cause Mama made it herself! :)

Disclaimer:  I feel the need to say this-  I know that zillions of babies have eaten jarred baby food for zillions of years and they are just fine.  I completely get that, and have no problem with it. I say whatever works for you and your family is the way to go.  For now, this is what works for me and my family.  There, I feel better now. :)

4 Months Old Today!!

That's right, our little girl is 4 months old today.  Her newest thing is grabbing for and holding things.  She grabs for most things you put in front of her and immediately it goes to her mouth.  She's sitting up much better but still needs support.  She also still loves to roll over on her tummy, we're already seeing signs that she wants to crawl.  But she can take her time, I'm in no rush for her to grow up :) We've also started solid foods which I've been blogging about.  So our little 4 month old is doing great and I have to say is getting cuter by the day :)

She loved it!

Hmmmm??
...and look who's right there waiting for something to drop!
I like it mom!
She loved the sweet potato!  I was so glad because I really hope this helps her with spitting up.  They said to start out with just a tablespoon and she ate all of it.  Now, Im excited to try new foods.

It's Solid Food Time!

So little miss will be 4 months old tomorrow, and I'm ready and raring to go with solid foods.  She has had such a problem with spitting up since she was born and I think that incorporating some solids will really help her keep it down.  I've known since she was born that I wanted to try to make my own homemade baby food, not only do I want her to have the healthiest foods possible but I know I'll really enjoy doing it (I think I was inspired by Diane Keaton in Baby Boom, love that movie).  Ive had my eye on the baby bullet since I saw the informercial when I was pregnant.  Then I found it at Kohls- paired with my 30% off coupon- it was just meant to be.  After all my reading I made my first batch this afternoon:

Savannah meets the spoon
 peel the sweet potato
cut into chunks
steam, about 20 minutes
put in baby bullet, add water and puree the heck out of it
puree, puree, puree
and.... wa-la, homemade, all natural baby food
put in adorable baby bullet cups,
use the date dial with todays date
put enough in fridge for 3 days and freeze the rest
silicone freezer cups
 put in freezer
Thoughts:  The baby bullet worked really well and was super easy to use.  After steaming the potato, it only took me 10 minutes to puree and store it.  Of course since Im just introducing solids to her I only did one small sweet potato today. After 4 days I'll introduce another kind of food and see how she takes to that.  Eventually I will make multiple foods and prepare enough to feed her for a week.  Overall, I liked the baby bullet and can't wait to see if she likes the sweet potato.  Were going to try it tonight so Shane can be here for the momentous occasion :)

F-A-M-I-L-Y Time!

My Grandma (my mom's mom) came down from Michigan last Tuesday to visit us but mostly to see Miss Savannah.  The last time she was down was in May when little miss wasn't feeling so good.  That was the week we started to realize something wasn't right- turns out it was her formula that she was allergic to.  Anyway, we had a great time with Gram, we went out to eat, did some shopping and got to have lots of fun with Savannah.  Then my mom came down on Friday and stayed up until about an hour ago.  My grandma flew back on Saturday.  Today my mom, Savannah and I had breakfast at Mel's (YUM) then went to visit my other Grandma (my dads mom) she got to meet Savannah when she was only 1 week old.  We visied for about 2 hours then Savannah was ready for a nap so we headed home. My mom headed back home to Sarasota and I picked up the dogs at Shane's parents- they were nice enough to offer to take them for the weekend since they knew we were going to have a full house.

Savannah was such a good girl; not just today but the entire week of having company and seeing new faces, she was just wonderful.  So it has been a long week and weekend.  Lots of eating out, entertaining and did I mention eating out? I didn't see the gym all week so I have to get back to it tomorrow....ugh.  Why can't I just be skinny and not have to worry about working out and losing weight.  That would really be great.

Anywho,  here's some pictures from our week...

Bloggin' Ain't Easy!

Jeesh! So yes, I have yet again changed the design of the blog. There was some kind of weird glitch with the last background, so I had to change it.  You wouldn't believe how difficult all this stuff is (for me anyway)! I'm determined to get it though.  So please excuse all these changes, I'll get it right one of these days...
